Three South Korean military officers were injured in an explosion within the western sector of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on Monday, September 21, 2026. The incident occurred during a military operation south of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) involving the 25th Infantry Division.

Two of the injured officers were evacuated from the site by helicopter, while the third was initially transported by land before being airlifted to a military hospital near Seoul. Reports indicate that at least one soldier sustained serious injuries, including a severed ankle.

The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the blast was caused by a North Korean mine, a South Korean mine, or another explosive device. Some officials suggested the possibility of North Korean mines being washed down by recent heavy rains or being part of recent fortification efforts by Pyongyang.

The DMZ is a highly fortified buffer zone between North and South Korea, containing an estimated 800,000 to 2 million landmines, many of which are legacy devices from the Korean War. Tensions have risen recently as North Korea has been actively strengthening its border defenses with new mines and barriers.
