Northern Israel explosion kills student and injures 24 on school trip

A deadly explosion involving unexploded ordnance occurred on Monday during a school hiking trip in northern Israel, near the Lebanese border. The incident took place in the Ramim Ridge area between Kibbutz Manara and Kibbutz Yiftach, involving students and teachers from ORT Ma’alot Yeshiva High School.

Preliminary investigations by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) suggest the blast was caused by a Hezbollah cluster munition that had remained unexploded in the area. Reports indicate the explosion may have been triggered after a student picked up the object and placed it in a backpack.

The blast killed a 14-year-old student and injured approximately 24 others, including several in serious or critical condition. Emergency responders from Magen David Adom utilized helicopters and multiple ambulances to evacuate the wounded to hospitals in Haifa and Nahariya.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Education Minister Yoav Kisch visited the injured at Rambam Hospital. Following the tragedy, Israeli police and bomb disposal experts secured the area, and authorities are reviewing whether to restrict school excursions in the border region due to the ongoing risk of unexploded munitions.
