Explosions on Iran's Qeshm Island Prompt Hormuz Strait Reopening Talks
Two explosions were heard on Qeshm Island in Iran's Hormozgan province on the night of 7 August, around 21:40 local time (18:20 GMT). The cause has not been identified, and Iranian authorities said no strike or incident was reported on Qeshm Island or the provincial capital Bandar Abbas. Iran’s armed forces said the blasts resulted from a confrontation with "hostile enemy targets" at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran and Oman have reached an understanding on a provisional 60‑day agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, pending approval by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. The plan would allow inbound vessels to use routes near Iran and outbound vessels to use routes near Oman, with no transit fees or service charges. After the agreement is approved, the United States and Iran are expected to reactivate Paragraph 5 of their peace memorandum of understanding to ensure safe commercial navigation.
The risk‑management firm EOS Risk Group raised the risk level for all Persian Gulf ports to HIGH (4/5) and warned that a new military escalation between the United States and Iran could occur within 24 hours. Some local sources suggested the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps may have fired warning shots toward the Hormuz Strait area. Iran tightened its grip on the strait on 28 February after a joint US‑Israel strike, barring vessels linked to those countries.
