Patía, Colombia: Car bomb attack near police station kills one

Patía Cauca car bomb El Estrecho Colombia violence

A vehicle bomb explosion near a police substation in El Estrecho, within the Patía municipality of Cauca, Colombia, resulted in at least one death and several injuries on November 4, 2026. The victim has been identified as Felipe Joaquín Rivera, a 20-year-old barber who supported elderly relatives and a young sister.

The explosion, which occurred near the Pan-American Highway, caused significant structural damage to nearby homes, businesses, and a public transport bus. At least two elderly women were reported injured and taken to a hospital in El Bordo with serious prognoses. Reports on the total number of casualties vary, with some sources citing up to six injured civilians.

Authorities are investigating whether the vehicle, reportedly a stolen truck from Timbío, was used as a car bomb or as a platform to launch improvised explosive devices known as “tatucos” against the police station. President Abelardo de la Espriella condemned the event as a “terrorist attack” and pledged a full security deployment to capture those responsible. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
