Germany investigates dual power grid sabotage attacks
Germany is investigating two separate acts of suspected sabotage targeting its electrical power grid within a 24-hour period.
In eastern Germany, near the Jänschwalde power plant in Brandenburg, unknown perpetrators used improvised, rocket-like devices to launch conductive material into high-voltage lines at the Turnow-Preilack substation. While the attack caused short-term interruptions and material damage, the grid operator 50Hertz reported that no widespread power outages occurred. Police are investigating the incident as a potential terrorist act, looking into both left-wing extremism and foreign-state involvement.
In western Germany, a similar incident occurred at a substation in Bergheim near Cologne. Authorities believe this was a deliberate act of sabotage rather than a technical failure. The disruption caused five lignite-fired power plant blocks from RWE Power to be disconnected from the grid. Interior Minister Herbert Reul stated that investigators are examining whether the attack was driven by left-wing extremists or directed by a foreign power.
In both cases, the attacks have raised significant national security concerns regarding the protection of critical infrastructure. The Association of Municipal Utilities (VKU) has called on the state to take greater responsibility for securing these vital systems against increasingly sophisticated threats.
