While the device failed to detonate, officials described the event as a near-catastrophe. On the same night, a second drone reportedly collided with a DHL cargo jet during the airport's emergency closure.

Investigators also discovered a third drone and traces of military explosives in a field near the airport on August 14. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that those responsible will be held accountable, noting an increase in hybrid attacks against Germany. While Russian intelligence has denied involvement, accusing officials of rushing to judgment, security experts suggest the incident may be part of a broader campaign of sabotage aimed at disrupting NATO logistics and Ukraine's supply chains.
