Argentina SME exports reach 13-year high amid domestic retail decline

Argentine Economy Minister Luis Caputo announced that small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) exports reached a 13-year high, totaling US$7.36 billion between January and August 2026. This represents a 24% increase compared to the previous year, driven by 6,721 participating SMEs, particularly in the agro-industrial manufacturing and primary products sectors.

Despite the export success, the domestic market faces challenges. Retail sales for SMEs have declined due to reduced purchasing power and increased household debt. Caputo addressed criticisms regarding the uneven economic recovery, noting that while sectors like energy and mining are performing well, others such as commerce, industry, and construction are struggling. President Javier Milei supported Caputo’s remarks, characterizing his response to critics as a ‘masterclass: irony’ on social media.
