Express Samina shipwreck anniversary marks 26 years since Paros tragedy
The 26th anniversary of the Express Samina shipwreck is being observed in Greece. On the night of September 26, 2000, the passenger ferry departed from Piraeus for Paros, destined for Lipsi, before striking rocks near the port of Paros and sinking.
The tragedy resulted in 81 deaths. Investigations into the incident highlighted technical and operational failures, including the use of an autopilot without supervision and the failure of a stabilization fin, which caused the vessel to drift off course.
Local residents and fishermen from Paros and Antiparos participated in rescue efforts under difficult conditions. The event remains a significant moment of mourning for the islands, marked by the loss of lives and the death of Assistant Port Lieutenant Dimitris Malamas during the coordination of the rescue operation.
