Extended Sleep and Chronic Financial Strain Linked to Early Brain Changes

A study of more than 2,400 participants from the Framingham Heart Study, average age 70, found that individuals who reported sleeping more than 8.5 hours per night had higher blood levels of the Alzheimer‑associated biomarker p‑tau181 compared with shorter sleepers. The elevated p‑tau181 suggests early neurodegenerative changes linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Short sleep (≤6 h) also showed increased p‑tau181, but the highest levels were observed in those sleeping 10 hours or more. Researchers note the association does not prove causality.

In a separate British cohort of 2,759 people born in 1946 and followed since birth, persistent low income or repeated financial hardship in early adulthood was associated with accelerated brain ageing. MRI scans showed greater brain atrophy and enlarged ventricles, and cognitive testing at age 53 revealed poorer memory and processing speed among those with chronic financial stress. The findings suggest long‑term socioeconomic adversity may hasten neuro‑degeneration.
