Exterminator removes massive hornet nest in Queens after city refusal
Sean Cadenhead, owner of Queens-based Phase One Exterminating, voluntarily removed a large bald-faced hornet nest from a city tree in Middle Village, New York. The nest, estimated to house approximately 400 hornets, was located roughly 10 feet above a public sidewalk near residential homes.
The removal followed reports that the NYC Parks Department had declined requests from local residents and Councilman Phil Wong to address the hive. The agency had previously stated it would not remove the nest because the insects play an important role in the ecosystem, suggesting instead that residents hire a private relocator or obtain a tree work permit.
Cadenhead performed the nearly hour-long task unannounced on a Wednesday morning, wearing full-body protective gear. He saturated the nest with pesticide before removing it. Local residents expressed relief at the action, noting the potential danger the nest posed to pedestrians and children in the area.
