Extra virgin olive oil prices vary across Spanish retailers
Retail prices for extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) in Spain show a price range of 60 cents per liter between different supermarket chains. According to data from major retailers, Consum offers the lowest price at 4.15 euros per liter, followed closely by Carrefour at 4.34 euros. Several chains, including Mercadona, Dia, Eroski, Hipercor, and Lupa, all price their one-liter bottles at 4.35 euros, while Alcampo is the most expensive at 4.75 euros per liter.
Data from the Mercasa Food in Spain yearbook indicates that the average Spaniard consumed 5.6 liters of olive oil last year, spending an average of 44.9 euros. While the price difference per liter may seem small, it can impact household budgets significantly over time. Additionally, purchasing larger formats such as 5-liter jugs can alter the effective price per liter compared to standard one-liter bottles.
