Extracurricular activities and child development guidance

As the school year progresses, families face the challenge of balancing schedules with extracurricular activities. Experts suggest that when planning these activities, parents should consider whether the child is participating for their own enjoyment or if the activity is primarily intended to help parents manage their work-life balance.

Pedagogue Leticia Garcés Larrea, director of the family orientation center Padres Formados, recommends that the ideal age to begin extracurriculars is around six years old. She emphasizes that activities such as sports, music, or arts should provide a space for learning and enjoyment rather than becoming an overwhelming burden on a child's schedule. A key component of this development is emotional education, which helps children recognize, regulate, and relate their emotions to others.

For specific activities like swimming, essential equipment includes waterproof backpacks with compartments for hygiene items and flip-flops, as well as swim caps. While silicone caps are durable, fabric caps may be more comfortable for some children, though they offer less protection against chlorine and water penetration.
