Operation Cantabria dismantles transnational cocaine trafficking network

Authorities have dismantled a massive transnational cocaine trafficking network through ‘Operation Cantabria,’ a joint effort involving Europol, Spanish, and Ecuadorian police. On October 8, 2026, the operation led to the arrest of 20 suspects and searches across 23 locations in Ecuador.

The criminal organization utilized sophisticated commercial engineering to smuggle drugs from South America to Europe. They operated at least 15 legal import and export companies specializing in tropical fruits, seafood, cocoa, and wood to hide cocaine within maritime containers. The network maintained operational bases in Peru and logistics centers in Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands, with financial links established in the United Arab Emirates.

A multi-year investigation spanning 13 major operations between 2022 and 2026 has resulted in the seizure of over 43 tons of cocaine. This includes a record 13-ton seizure in Spain. Investigators also utilized decrypted communications from the Sky ECC platform to gather evidence against the group.
