Extremadura consumer spending shifts toward food and dining
Consumer spending patterns in Extremadura are undergoing a significant shift in priorities, according to data from BBVA Research. While total in-person spending saw an 11.8% year-on-year increase in the first quarter of 2026, the growth is highly uneven across different sectors.
Growth is being driven primarily by essential and social sectors. Supermarkets and food services recorded nearly 20% growth, while bars and restaurants rose by approximately 18%. Large retail outlets also saw increases exceeding 10%, and spending on vehicles and fuel continued to grow at double digits.
Conversely, several sectors have experienced declines. Spending on electronics, travel, transport, and beauty and wellness services has moved into negative territory. BBVA Research describes the current situation as an ‘aggregate strength’ in consumption, though it notes a high level of heterogeneity between different economic sectors.
