Extremadura electrical grid expansion proposed for two gigafactories
The Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco) has proposed expanding the electrical distribution networks in Extremadura to support industrial growth, specifically targeting two planned gigafactories.
The plan includes the construction of seven new substation parks, 73 kilometers of new lines, and the reinforcement of 1,018 kilometers of existing lines to increase capacity. These upgrades aim to meet an additional demand of 2.6 gigawatts (GW) from the transport grid, half of which is intended for industrial use.
Key projects include infrastructure to accelerate the battery gigafactory in Campo Arañuelo and developments in the Trujillo area planned for the next decade. Additionally, the proposal seeks to increase access capacity for renewable energy by over 750 megawatts (MW) and storage by over 450 MW.
