Extremadura Health Service acquires 15 new retinographs

The Extremadura Health Service has incorporated 15 new non-mydriatic open-field retinographs to enhance its Early Detection Program for Diabetic Retinopathy. The equipment, valued at 725,818 euros, has been distributed across all health areas to replace devices that had not been updated in over 20 years.

These devices allow for fundus imaging in a single shot without the need for prior pupil dilation, increasing patient safety and avoiding adverse side effects. The technology enables the program to function via telemedicine, with images being integrated directly into patient clinical records for review by ophthalmology services.

In 2025, the program performed 7,127 retinographies. The initiative targets patients over 14 years old diagnosed with diabetes for more than five years, successfully identifying early-stage retinopathy in more than 10% of patients, which facilitates timely treatment to prevent blindness.
