Extremadura hunting federation warns of declining deer populations
The Extremadura Hunting Federation (Fedexcaza) has issued a warning regarding the concerning evolution of deer populations in the region. José María Gallardo, president of Fedexcaza, has called for a moderation in deer captures within traditional big-game hunting areas to prevent irreversible ecological damage.
Despite these concerns, the hunting season has commenced with significant participation from both Spanish and foreign hunters. The activity remains a vital economic driver for the rural landscape, supporting various sectors including rural accommodations, hotels, restaurants, and the meat industry in towns such as Cáceres and Trujillo.
Estimates suggest that big-game hunting activities, such as 'monterías', generate approximately 200 million euros annually in the region. The industry also supports numerous local trades, including gunsmiths, taxidermists, and catering services, contributing to employment and the social fabric of local hunting societies.
