Extremadura municipalities face potential loss of public aid over unpaid accounts
A total of 126 municipalities in Extremadura, Spain, have failed to submit their general accounts for the 2022, 2023, or 2024 fiscal years to the Court of Auditors (Tribunal de Cuentas). This represents nearly one-third of the 388 municipalities in the region, including 69 in Badajoz and 57 in Cáceres.
In response, the Joint Commission for Relations with the Court of Auditors has proposed stricter penalties for non-compliance. A recent agreement published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) urges the government to implement regulatory changes that would make being up to date with the Court of Auditors a prerequisite for receiving public subsidies or aid.
While this is currently a proposal for legislative modification rather than an active prohibition, it could significantly impact local administrations. Of the 126 delinquent municipalities, 108 have specifically failed to submit their 2024 accounts.
