Extremadura officials meet Spanish Culture Minister regarding museum security and Mérida museum

Laureano León, the Culture Counselor for the Junta de Extremadura, met with Spanish Minister of Culture Ernest Urtasun in Madrid to discuss regional cultural priorities. Key topics included enhancing security for state-owned museums managed by the Junta following recent thefts and maintaining the national library network.

A major focus of the meeting was the advancement of the future Visigothic Museum in Mérida. This project aims to create a dedicated space for the Visigothic collection from the National Museum of Roman Art, which is considered the most significant of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula. The project has faced long-term delays, having been proposed in 2009 with an original target inauguration of 2013, and was removed from the General State Budgets in 2019.
