France records hottest summer since 1900 amid extreme heat and drought
France recorded its hottest summer since meteorological measurements began in 1900. According to Météo-France, the summer of 2026 saw an average temperature of 24°C, which is 3.6°C above the seasonal norm.
The period was characterized by three major heatwaves totaling 53 days, an unprecedented duration. Approximately 45% of the French territory experienced maximum temperatures reaching or exceeding 40°C, with the threshold being crossed 178 times across various stations. This extreme heat was accompanied by a significant drought, with precipitation levels 40% below seasonal norms.
Environmental consequences included widespread wildfires, notably in the Gironde region, which destroyed over 47,000 hectares. The Ministry of Health reported a provisional death toll of approximately 7,300 attributed to the high temperatures. Météo-France CEO Virginie Schwarz stated that such conditions would have been nearly impossible without human-induced climate change.
