Extreme heat and holiday celebrations trigger safety warnings in Canada

Public health officials and animal welfare organizations are issuing safety precautions as extreme heat and Canada Day celebrations approach. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued an orange alert for extreme temperatures, prompting Niagara Region Public Health to advise residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities, and seek air-conditioned spaces.

Health officials emphasized the need to check on vulnerable populations, including older adults, infants, and those experiencing homelessness. Warnings were also issued against leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles.

The Ottawa Humane Society has advised pet owners to prepare for potential disruptions caused by holiday fireworks, which can spook animals. Recommendations include securing pets in quiet, enclosed areas like basements or crates, using white noise to mask sounds, and ensuring all pets have updated identification, such as collars, tags, and microchips.
