Extreme heat causes fatalities in Mexicali and Nuevo Laredo

Extreme heatwaves in northern Mexico are resulting in multiple fatalities and a surge in heat-related illnesses. In Mexicali, the Secretary of Health reports 34 deaths, primarily occurring in the city, with additional fatalities recorded in San Felipe and Ensenada. To assist vulnerable populations, including migrants and people experiencing homelessness, the National Guard has implemented the DN3 plan to distribute water and oral rehydration solutions at strategic locations.

In Nuevo Laredo, health officials confirmed the first death due to heatstroke, involving a 40-year-old man treated at the Hospital General de Zona No. 11. Local health authorities reported that 26 people have been treated for heat-related ailments this season, including cases of dehydration, sunstroke, and sunburns. Construction workers and individuals working outdoors are identified as being at the highest risk.
