Extreme heat causes multiple hospitalizations in Akita and Toyama

Extreme heatwaves have caused multiple heatstroke hospitalizations across Akita and Toyama prefectures.

In Akita Prefecture, temperatures exceeded 35°C in several locations, including Senboku City, where temperatures reached 36.7°C. At least 10 people were transported to hospitals due to suspected heatstroke, including a junior high school student playing softball. The region also experienced unstable atmospheric conditions, leading to heavy rain that temporarily disrupted JR East train services on the Ou Line.

In Toyama Prefecture, high temperatures led to at least seven people, ranging in age from 10 to 90, being hospitalized for heatstroke symptoms. Significant cases included a 90-year-old woman and two men in their 60s. Local industries, such as the sun-drying of sedge for traditional straw hat making in Takaoka City, have had to contend with intense sunlight and high temperatures.
