Extreme heat forces European music festivals to adapt
Rising temperatures across Europe are forcing music festivals to reconsider their operational models. According to the Observatori Fabra, Barcelona recently experienced its warmest July in 113 years, with daily maximum temperatures consistently exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.
Extreme heat has already led to significant disruptions. In the Netherlands, the Defqon. 1 festival was forced to cancel after only one of its four scheduled days. In France, the Solidays charity festival in Paris was suspended, while festivals in Avignon and Aix-en-Provence had to adjust their schedules. In Valencia, Spain, heatwaves caused the cancellation of performances by UB40 and Ana Torroja.
The YOUROPE association, which represents major festivals like Primavera Sound and Mad Cool, reports that climate and temperature have become the fourth most significant concern for organizers, trailing only production costs and artist booking difficulties.
