Extreme Heat Fuels Global Cooling Demand and Sets Record Temperatures in Italy

Rising extreme heat is becoming a leading cause of mortality worldwide, with an estimated 489,000 heat‑related deaths each year. Air‑conditioning, once a luxury, is now recognized as essential for survival; in the United States it cuts heat‑wave death risk by 75 % and studies in The Lancet attribute roughly 190,000 saved lives annually to cooling for people over 65. The surge in cooling needs highlights stark inequalities: Europe, despite warming faster than any other continent, has only about 23 % of households with air‑conditioning, while in India the rapid expansion of installations—50 million added between 2019‑2024 and projected to reach 150 million in the next decade—strains electricity grids, causing blackouts and social tension. Global demand for cooling is expected to more than triple by 2050, raising concerns that increased AC use powered by fossil fuels could add 0.07 °C to average temperatures unless paired with energy‑efficient buildings, smart grids and renewable sources.

In Italy, the summer of 2026 is on track to become the hottest on record, potentially surpassing the infamous 2003 heatwave. Atmospheric physicist Lorenzo Giovannini of the University of Trento warned that the intense heat is likely to persist into mid‑August and may become the new norm. He noted that accumulated heat in the Mediterranean could later fuel severe storms and heavy rainfall in autumn, extending the impact of the heat wave beyond the summer months.
