Extreme heat in Şanlıurfa increases kidney stone risk

Extreme temperatures in Şanlıurfa, reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius, are increasing the risk of kidney stones and urinary tract infections due to fluid loss through perspiration.

Prof. Dr. Eyyüp Sabri Pelit, a faculty member at Harran University Hospital's Department of Urology, warns that insufficient fluid intake causes urine to become more concentrated, which increases the likelihood of minerals precipitating and forming stones. He emphasizes that individuals should not wait until they feel thirsty to drink water, as thirst is a sign that dehydration has already begun.

Pelit notes that tea, coffee, and sugary beverages are not adequate substitutes for water. High-risk groups include those with chronic kidney disease, a history of kidney stone surgery, or a family history of the condition. Additionally, he advises reducing salt and excessive protein intake to protect kidney health.
