Extreme heat increases utility costs and disrupts daily life in the US

Extreme heat is increasingly impacting daily life and household finances across the United States. An AP-NORC poll indicates that more American adults report extreme heat influencing their daily routines compared to 2024. Approximately 80% of respondents noted an impact on electricity bills, a significant increase from 69% in 2024. This trend is particularly pronounced in the Midwest, where 44% of people reported major impacts on power costs.

Beyond financial strain, heat is altering lifestyle choices. About 40% of adults said heat has changed their travel or vacation plans, and 70% reported interference with outdoor family activities. Climate scientists note that heat waves are becoming more frequent, intense, and persistent, particularly in Western and Midwestern states.

In California, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reports that extreme heat days have increased by an average of 55% statewide over the last two decades. The report highlights a growing crisis where high utility costs make air conditioning unaffordable for many. California families spend an estimated $4 billion annually on home cooling, with annual utility bills increasing by $95 to $800. With nearly 7 million ratepayers in utility debt, many households face a choice between health risks from heat exposure and financial instability.
