Extreme heatwaves cause mass casualties in Europe and threaten Colombia

Extreme heatwaves and rising temperatures are causing significant health and environmental crises across Europe and are projected to impact Latin America. In Europe, record-breaking summer temperatures have been linked to over 25,000 premature deaths by mid-August. Spain has specifically recorded 3,158 heat-related fatalities this year, alongside 43 forest fires that destroyed 265,000 hectares.

Residential infrastructure in Spain faces challenges, with approximately 60% of buildings suffering from overheating due to older construction standards and a lack of air conditioning. This creates dangerous indoor environments, particularly for vulnerable populations like infants and the elderly.

In South America, the IDEAM reports an 81% probability that the El Niño phenomenon will reach excessive intensity in Colombia during the final quarter of the year. Experts warn that the continued use of fossil fuels is driving these climate trends, with forest fire risks expected to increase by 30% by 2050 and over 50% by the end of the century.
