Extreme heatwaves impact Greece and Japan

Greece is experiencing a prolonged and intense heatwave, with temperatures reaching 41.5 degrees Celsius in several regions. In the city of Preveza, the heat index reached a perceived temperature of 48 degrees Celsius, according to the National Observatory of Athens. The combination of extreme heat and strong winds has significantly increased the risk of forest fires across much of the country.

In Athens, tropical nights have been reported, with temperatures remaining above 30 degrees Celsius overnight, posing health risks to vulnerable populations. High temperatures have also been recorded in mountainous areas, with values nearing 40 degrees Celsius.

Simultaneously, Japan is facing extreme temperatures. The highest recorded temperature was 38.3 degrees Celsius in Kousa, Kumamoto Prefecture. Data from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) indicated that 405 measurement points across the country recorded temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius or higher, with 45 points exceeding 35 degrees Celsius.
