Extreme heatwaves set to shatter records in Sevilla, Athens, Phoenix, Dubai and New Delhi

Meteorologists warn that a combination of global warming, unusually warm oceans and a new El Niño episode is creating conditions for historic summer temperatures across several continents. Heat‑domes – high‑pressure systems that trap hot air – are becoming more frequent, intensifying the extreme heat.

Cities expected to face record highs include Sevilla, Spain, where temperatures could again exceed 44 °C; Athens, Greece, with forecasts above 40 °C; Phoenix, United States, poised for another stretch of extreme days; Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where daytime highs regularly surpass 42 °C and humidity can push perceived temperatures over 50 °C; and New Delhi, India, which has approached 50 °C in recent years. Experts say these episodes will become more common and intense in the coming decades.
