Extreme weather accelerates biological aging and impacts biodiversity
New research highlights the severe biological impacts of extreme weather events on both wildlife and human health.
Scientists from Yale University have developed models showing that extreme weather, such as heatwaves and sudden temperature drops, significantly limits the habitats of over 500 bird species in North America. By incorporating extreme weather variables rather than just seasonal averages, researchers found that previous models overestimated bird habitats by as much as several dozen percent for certain species. This study, which utilized eBird citizen science data, emphasizes that accurate modeling is vital for effective biodiversity conservation.
Simultaneously, a study by researchers from Harvard University and Zhejiang University suggests that extreme heat waves can accelerate human biological aging. Analyzing medical and meteorological data from 50 Chinese cities, researchers found that each significant heat wave can advance biological age by approximately six months. The study noted that factors such as cholesterol and glycated hemoglobin levels are key indicators of this metabolic stress, with overweight individuals and urban residents being particularly vulnerable.
