ExxonMobil and Mozambique's EDM fund $1.1M power grid expansion in Quionga

ExxonMobil and state-owned utility Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) are investing about $1.1 million to extend the national electricity grid to the Quionga administrative post in Cabo Delgado Province. The second‑phase project will lay roughly 25 km of 33‑kV transmission lines, install four 100 kVA transformers, add 6.1 km of low‑voltage distribution, and place 60 streetlights, linking roughly 600 households—about 3,000 people—to the grid.

The initiative, announced by Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Estêvão Pale and Cabo Delgado Governor Valige Tauabo, is tied to ExxonMobil’s Area 4 gas development and the planned Rovuma LNG project in the province. It is intended to bolster local support for the gas venture and aid the region’s recovery from years of insecurity. Completion is targeted for February 2027. Mozambique aims for universal electricity access by 2030, having raised its electrification rate from 32.7 % in 2020 to 63.7 % today.
