ExxonMobil lawsuit dismissal clears path for SpaceX spaceport in Louisiana

A federal judge has dismissed a long-standing coastal damages lawsuit brought by Vermilion Parish and the state of Louisiana against ExxonMobil. The dismissal follows a settlement announced by Governor Jeff Landry in June, effectively ending a legal battle that had lasted over a decade.

The resolution is expected to facilitate the development of Louisiana’s first spaceport. The settlement may free up approximately 130,000 acres of Exxon-owned marshland in Vermilion Parish for use by SpaceX. Governor Landry is scheduled to formally announce the SpaceX deal on Tuesday, August 25, in Abbeville.

The lawsuit was part of a broader series of 42 legal actions alleging that oil and gas companies contributed to Louisiana’s coastal land loss through drilling and dredging. While the specific financial terms of the Exxon settlement remain confidential, Governor Landry stated the agreement will assist in clearing hundreds of orphaned wells from the coast without taxpayer expense.
