ExxonMobil nears return to Venezuela oil fields

ExxonMobil is reportedly nearing a preliminary agreement with the Venezuelan state-run oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), to explore investment in several oil fields. This potential move would mark the company’s return to the country approximately 19 years after its assets were nationalized in 2007.

The negotiations focus on developed and undeveloped fields within the Orinoco Belt, a region containing some of the world’s largest deposits of extra-heavy petroleum. Specifically, the discussions involve fields such as Petromonagas and Petrovictoria, where ExxonMobil previously held operations.

While the potential deal offers access to vast resources, it carries significant geopolitical risks. The company would need to commit substantial long-term capital to rebuild infrastructure in a jurisdiction characterized by historical asset expropriation and ongoing political instability.
