ExxonMobil to begin Ionian Sea drilling in early 2027

ExxonMobil has confirmed that the first offshore hydrocarbon exploration drilling in the Ionian Sea is scheduled to begin in the early months of 2027. This marks the first such activity in Greek waters in nearly half a century.

Following a meeting between Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou and ExxonMobil Vice President John Ardill, officials confirmed that the project is proceeding according to plan. The drilling is slated for Block A2 in the Ionian Sea. The consortium's ownership structure consists of ExxonMobil with a 60% stake, Energean with 30%, and HELLENiQ Energy with 10%.

Minister Papastavrou emphasized that adhering to these timelines is critical for enhancing Greece's credibility and fostering trust with major international energy corporations. He noted that the country is demonstrating its ability to plan methodically while complying with international environmental standards.
