ExxonMobil's Rovuma LNG Project in Mozambique Wins SMDC Consortium Contract

ExxonMobil Mozambique has awarded a Letter of Intent for engineering and limited procurement services to the SMDC joint venture, a consortium of Saipem, McDermott, Daewoo Engineering & Construction and China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation (CPECC). The contract covers the first phase of the 18.6 million‑tonne‑per‑annum Rovuma LNG facility on the Afungi Peninsula in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, which will include 12 liquefaction modules fed by gas from the deep‑water Mamba field.

The consortium will carry out preliminary engineering, procurement and feasibility reviews ahead of a final investment decision expected by the end of 2026. Daewoo Engineering & Construction highlighted its role as a prime contractor, noting it is the first Korean builder to serve as a prime EPC contractor on an LNG liquefaction project of this scale. The project is slated to include a large gas‑fired combined‑cycle power plant to supply electricity for the liquefaction process.
