Eye doctor Ömer Faruk Tabar cautions against counterfeit sunglasses in Turkey

Ophthalmologist Op. Dr. Ömer Faruk Tabar warned that cheap sunglasses made from low‑quality glass or plastic can cause permanent eye damage. He stressed that many visually appealing, coloured frames are sold without proper UV protection, and that dark lenses can enlarge the pupil, increasing exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays. Tabar explained that prolonged use of such counterfeit eyewear raises the risk of cataract formation, potentially accelerating the onset from the typical 60‑70 year age range to the 40s for heavy sun‑exposed individuals. He urged the public to prioritize eye health over aesthetics and to choose certified sunglasses that block UV radiation.

The warning comes amid rising summer temperatures and a surge in sunglasses use, prompting health experts to emphasize the importance of proper eye protection.
