Eye health care is vital for people with Down syndrome
Medical specialists emphasize the importance of early and periodic eye examinations for individuals with Down syndrome, as 60% to 70% of this population will experience vision problems during their lifetime.
Pediatric ophthalmologist María Santiago recommends an initial evaluation within the first three months of life to screen for congenital cataracts. Subsequent check-ups should occur around two and a half years of age, followed by annual examinations throughout adulthood.
Common visual issues include refractive errors, such as hyperopia (affecting 37%), myopia (18%), and astigmatism (nearly 50%). Other frequent conditions include strabismus, which affects approximately half of children with Down syndrome, and nystagmus, which occurs in up to 15% of cases.
