Eye health: Causes of twitching, dryness, and digital strain

Eye discomfort, such as eyelid twitching, burning, itching, or blurred vision, can stem from various causes ranging from lifestyle factors to underlying medical conditions. Experts note that eyelid twitching may be linked to stress, lack of sleep, or deficiencies in minerals like magnesium, calcium, or potassium.

Prolonged screen use contributes to 'computer vision syndrome.' This occurs because the eye's ciliary muscles struggle to focus on the blurred edges of pixels, leading to muscle fatigue, headaches, and blurred vision. Additionally, the frequency of blinking drops significantly during digital device use—from approximately fifteen times per minute to only five—which causes ocular dryness.

Beyond digital strain, certain symptoms may signal more serious health issues. Eye changes can be early indicators of diabetes or high blood pressure, even when vision remains sharp. Furthermore, conditions like Graves' disease can cause protruding eyes, eyelid swelling, and double vision.
