Eye health expert warns of permanent damage from eye rubbing
Ophthalmologist Op. Dr. Birtan Öztürk has warned that the habit of rubbing eyes due to fatigue, sleepiness, or itching can lead to permanent ocular damage. While rubbing may provide temporary relief by distributing tears or stimulating the vagus nerve to slow heart rate, the mechanical pressure poses significant risks.
Key risks identified include keratoconus and corneal thinning caused by repetitive pressure, as well as corneal scratches and scar tissue from microscopic particles. Additionally, rubbing can increase the risk of infection through bacterial transfer from hands, exacerbate itching in allergic eyes by increasing histamine release, and cause temporary spikes in intraocular pressure, which is particularly dangerous for glaucoma patients.
