Digital eye strain and screen use impact ocular health
Prolonged use of digital devices is increasingly linked to eye health issues, including digital eye strain and computer vision syndrome. Experts note that intense screen time reduces blink frequency—dropping from the normal 15–20 times per minute to as few as five to seven—which leads to ocular surface dryness, redness, and irritation.
Symptoms of this strain include eye fatigue, headaches, blurred vision, and involuntary eyelid tremors known as eyelid myokymia, often triggered by stress, caffeine, or fatigue. In some cases, continuous near-focusing and lack of natural light are associated with an increased risk of myopia in children and adolescents.
To mitigate these effects, specialists recommend the ‘20-20-20 rule’: every 20 minutes, look at something approximately 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Other preventative measures include maintaining a comfortable screen distance, adjusting brightness to reduce glare, and making a conscious effort to blink regularly. A report from The Vision Council highlights that while 78% of surveyed adults experience eye fatigue after screen use, many remain unaware of the causes or the benefits of seeking professional eyecare.
