Eye health experts warn of dry eye and macular degeneration risks

Medical experts are highlighting key indicators for eye health concerns, specifically regarding dry eye syndrome and macular degeneration.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Akgün Sayar warns that seasonal changes in autumn and winter—such as dropping temperatures, wind, and increased use of indoor heating—can exacerbate dry eye symptoms. Common signs include burning, stinging, redness, and a sensation of grit in the eyes. Additionally, prolonged use of digital screens can reduce blinking frequency, disrupting the eye's moisture balance. Experts recommend taking regular breaks from screens and maintaining proper hydration.

Separately, Professor Hande Çeliker of Biruni University warns that seeing straight lines as curved or wavy can be a symptom of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This condition affects the central part of the retina, which is responsible for detailed vision. While the dry type of AMD often progresses slowly, the wet type can cause rapid vision loss due to fluid buildup or bleeding under the retina. Risk factors include aging, family history, and smoking.
