Brazilian ophthalmologists address autism care and visual rehabilitation

During the 70th Brazilian Congress of Ophthalmology in Salvador, experts addressed critical challenges in eye care, including specialized needs for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the expansion of visual rehabilitation services.

Ophthalmologist Raíra Fortuna highlighted that children with ASD face significant barriers in clinical settings, such as sensory hypersensitivity and routine intolerance. With approximately 40% of these children experiencing associated anxiety and a high prevalence of strabismus (41%), Fortuna recommended environmental adaptations like reduced lighting, noise control, and predictable scheduling to ensure effective exams.

Regarding visual rehabilitation, the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology (CBO) identified 95 Specialized Rehabilitation Centers (CERs) across Brazil, primarily through the Unified Health System (SUS). Led by Karina Eiko Yamashita, the mapping aims to increase awareness of these free services, which are distributed across all regions, with the highest concentration in the Southeast (39) and Northeast (31).

Technological advancements, particularly Artificial Intelligence, are also transforming rehabilitation. Tools such as smart canes and audio description systems are enhancing autonomy for those with low vision or blindness. However, specialists warn of the need for ethical oversight regarding AI data biases and emphasize that professional medical guidance remains essential for the correct use of these technologies.

Additionally, ophthalmologist Ana Paula Silverio warned about the rising incidence of dry eye in children and adolescents due to excessive screen time. Prolonged use of mobile devices reduces blinking frequency, leading to ocular surface irritation and discomfort.
