Italy launches nationwide free eye screenings for World Sight Day
In observance of World Sight Day on October 8, various health initiatives and free eye screenings are being conducted across multiple regions in Italy. Promoted by the World Health Organization, IAPB Italia, and the Unione Italiana dei Ciechi e degli Ipovedenti, these programs aim to raise awareness about vision preservation and early diagnosis of ocular diseases.
In Sicily, a network of nine eye clinics and three mobile ophthalmic units is providing services across the provinces. Puglia is hosting a series of screenings in cities such as Polignano a Mare, Taranto, and Lecce, with mobile clinics also targeting students in Cassano delle Murge. In Basilicata, free screenings are scheduled in Avigliano and Matera, while in Tuscany, the Asl Toscana Sud Est is offering slots for residents in Arezzo, Siena, and Grosseto, specifically targeting individuals over 40.
Other regional activities include open days at hospitals in Cremona and Oglio Po, and specialized screenings in Messina and various locations in Puglia. Research also highlights a gender gap in vision loss, noting that women experience higher rates of severe vision impairment, including cataracts and age-related macular degeneration, compared to men.
