Eye health: Understanding dry eye syndrome and solar retinopathy

Eye discomfort such as dryness, burning, or a sandy sensation can stem from various causes, including prolonged screen use or observing solar eclipses. Dry eye syndrome is often linked to an unstable tear film, which consists of mucous, aqueous, and lipid layers. When the oily layer is insufficient or the aqueous component is low, tears evaporate too quickly. Digital device use exacerbates this by reducing blink frequency by up to one-third.

Following a solar eclipse, similar symptoms of dryness or irritation may occur due to reduced blinking, even when using protective eyewear. However, more serious symptoms such as dark spots in the central field of vision, blurred vision, altered colors, or distorted images may indicate solar retinopathy. Such conditions can result from even brief direct exposure to the sun, particularly through optical instruments without proper filters, and require professional ophthalmic evaluation.
