Eye injury in Istanbul leads to 2.5‑hour surgery to remove screw fragment

On 12 June, 42‑year‑old glass worker Ramazan Öztürk was drilling in Pendik, Istanbul, when a screw fragment broke off and entered his eye. He initially mistook the sensation for a splinter, but worsening pain and tearing prompted a hospital visit. After an initial examination at another clinic, he was transferred on 13 June to the Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Education and Research Hospital. Ophthalmology specialists led by Associate Professor Dr. Sadık Etka Bayramoğlu performed a 2–2.5 hour operation, extracting a metal piece about 2.5–3 mm long and 1–1.5 mm wide from the deep layers of the eye. Öztürk recovered without lasting damage. The doctors highlighted that such injuries occur frequently—averaging five to ten cases daily—and warned that the use of protective goggles could reduce eye‑injury incidents by 90‑95 %.
