Eye protection is essential for hiking in the Bavarian Alps
High UV radiation levels in the Bavarian Alps pose a significant risk to eye health during mountain excursions. Due to thinner atmosphere at higher altitudes, UV intensity increases by approximately 15 to 20 percent for every 1,000 meters of elevation gain.
Environmental factors further intensify this exposure. Snow can reflect between 80 and 90 percent of UV radiation, whereas non-snowy terrain reflects only about 20 percent. Consequently, sunlight reaches the eyes not only from above but also through reflection from the ground.
To mitigate these risks, experts recommend essential gear such as appropriate sunglasses and hiking caps. A well-chosen cap helps reduce glare, manages sweat, and protects the face from direct sunlight, which is particularly useful during tours with changing weather conditions and varying sun exposure.
