Eye screening identifies vision issues among NAN journalists

During a medical outreach organized by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) as part of the NAN 2026 Media Week, optometrist Dr. Ezinwanne Osuji conducted eye screenings for staff at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Lagos office.

The screening identified uncorrected presbyopia and digital eye strain as significant issues among journalists, who frequently use digital devices. Dr. Osuji, Medical Director of Digital Bridge Eye Clinic, advised professionals to adopt the ‘20-20-20 rule’—looking at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes—to relieve eye muscles.

Sponsored by Lions Club International District 404B4, the initiative included the distribution of free glasses. Dr. Osuji also warned against the dangers of self-medication, specifically the misuse of chloramphenicol, and emphasized the importance of early detection for conditions like glaucoma to prevent irreversible blindness.
