Eye‑Health Experts Warn Common Habits Increase Vision‑Loss Risk
Ophthalmologists in Brazil and Kazakhstan caution that everyday habits such as frequent changes in eyeglass prescription, noticing halos around lights, difficulty driving at night, persistent eye itching, rubbing, and improper contact‑lens care can accelerate serious eye diseases. Conditions highlighted include glaucoma, age‑related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, cataract, retinal detachment, and keratoconus – a corneal thinning disorder.
Early detection is critical. The World Health Organization estimates 2.2 billion people worldwide have some visual impairment, with roughly one‑billion cases preventable through timely diagnosis and treatment. Brazil’s Ministry of Health urges regular eye examinations to avert blindness. For keratoconus, specialists recommend prompt cross‑linking therapy, which uses riboflavin and ultraviolet light to strengthen the cornea and reduce the need for corneal transplant.
Both experts stress that seemingly minor symptoms—such as occasional visual halos, night‑vision difficulty, or eye irritation—should not be ignored, as delays of months or years can turn treatable conditions into irreversible vision loss.
