Eyelash extensions, while popular for aesthetic enhancement, present potential risks to ocular health due to the proximity of the procedure to the sensitive eye surface and the use of strong adhesives.

Scientific research, including studies published in Cornea, has linked the application of extensions to complications such as keratoconjunctivitis, often caused by adhesives or removal products, and allergic blepharitis. More recent studies in Contact Lens and Anterior Eye have identified short-term changes in tear film stability and stress on the corneal epithelium immediately following application.

Adhesives typically contain cyanoacrylate compounds, which can cause irritation through vapors. While there are concerns regarding Demodex mites, there is currently no scientific evidence that eyelash extensions cause or increase their presence. Experts recommend seeking medical attention if symptoms such as persistent itching, burning, redness, swelling, or the sensation of a foreign body occur.
